2025 Canada Election Shocker: Jagmeet Singh’s NDP Struggles to Hold Ground with Only 12 Seats, Loses ‘National Party’ Status

Posted on April 29, 2025April 29, 2025 By Amelia Green No Comments on 2025 Canada Election Shocker: Jagmeet Singh’s NDP Struggles to Hold Ground with Only 12 Seats, Loses ‘National Party’ Status

The 2025 Canadian federal election gave a surprising and sobering result for Jagmeet Singh and his party, the New Democratic Party (NDP). The party won just eight seats out of 343. This drop from 24 seats in the last vote cost the NDP its "national party" tag.

The Political Landscape Change

When polls closed on April 29, the result was clear. Singh chose to step down as leader. He called the night’s outcome "disappointing for New Democrats." The NDP had played a key role in Canadian politics, yet the new result shows a fall in votes and trust.

In this round, Singh’s NDP fell behind two other groups. The ruling Liberal Party, led by Mark Carney, won about 156 seats. The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, took roughly 145 seats. The NDP ended up as a clear third choice. This ranking raises questions about its path ahead.

Implications for Key Supporters

The shift in votes affects many supporters, including members of the Sikh community. Singh, who comes from a Sikh background, had support from voters who back Khalistani ideas. The result shows that this link did not lead to more seats and may have pushed away some potential voters.

Before the vote, Singh mixed smart moves with risks. He backed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during hard talks with India. Soon after, he steered the party away from the Liberals to mark a separate identity.

What Lies Ahead?

The party now faces an unclear future. With only eight seats, Singh’s exit makes clear that the party must change its plans and message. His term pushed the party toward progress. Yet the result may force a new look at how the party reaches its supporters and fits within the nation.

As politics change in Canada, the NDP must find its footing and meet the needs of a growing mix of voters. Losing national party status will affect funding and rights and shift future election plans and links with others.

The 2025 vote will be a key moment for Singh and the NDP. It brings both problems and a chance to rebuild and connect with Canadians. How Singh and his party respond now will mark a new chapter in their role in the nation.
